2024 was not only a year of cryptocurrency growth, but also huge losses. Hackers came up with new ways to steal funds. Despite the fact that cryptocurrency was growing steadily and many investors were able to increase their budget, it was not without bitter losses. The bull market allowed some investors to enjoy the victory, increasing their capital several times, while others had to lose their savings due to North Korean hackers.
If the total market losses for 2024 are estimated at about $3 billion, then a third of them were stolen by North Korean hackers. Moreover, the schemes have become even more sophisticated. For example, the Japanese DMM Bitcoin exchange suffered $300 million. A hacker, posing as an employer, sent one of the exchange employees a test task, after completing which the latter could get a new high-paying job. As a result of downloading this task, the virus got onto the employee's computer and compromised it.
In this way, hackers got passwords to wallets and withdrew more than 4,000 bitcoins, at that rate. Today, this theft is estimated at 400 million dollars.
Another popular new method is to invite a potential victim to a fake video conference. He opens the link and gets a virus, which subsequently steals passwords from his computer.
As we can see, modern antivirus programs were unable to protect the victims' computers. New viruses are much smarter than the previous ones. And as often happens, first a new cunning virus appears, does its dirty work and only then, after a while, an antivirus appears for it.
