Costa del Sol, Spain's southernmost Mediterranean resort, located between the Costa Tropical and Campo de Gibraltar coasts, was the scene of a dramatic and terrifying detective story. The Spanish police later published details of the seven-hour operation and a video showing CNP officers surrounding the Audi with the criminals after the victim managed to escape.
Journalists managed to talk to both the investigators and the victim, a crypto millionaire, who told them some horrific things.
"The criminals planned the crime after learning about the victim's wealth and access to large amounts of cryptocurrency. The men took the businessman hostage and demanded £25,000 (€30,000). However, the kidnapped crypto millionaire managed to free himself from captivity thanks to his ingenuity.
The victim was able to trick the kidnappers by calling a friend in London and explaining everything. All three Britons have been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, causing bodily harm, membership of a criminal organisation, illegal possession of weapons and drug trafficking," police said.
Also, during a search of the apartment, police found over £8,000 in euros, weapons, 25 grams of pink cocaine, and other evidence. All three are currently under arrest and in custody.
"I'm used to risks — the market is unstable and customers vary. But what happened to me in Spain was not business. It was a trap, torture and a fight for my life.
In Marbella, I accidentally met three British men. They looked like ordinary tourists. They were very polite, talkative, a little intrusive. One of them invited me to dinner at an apartment in the neighbouring resort town of Estepona. And I agreed to accept the invitation. There, I was detained, tied up and threatened with murder until I gave them access to my clients' cryptocurrency wallets.
I lay on the floor and listened as one of them discussed that they had to ‘do it cleanly.’ They were armed. Guns, knives, even cocaine were lying on the table. I realised that if I didn't find a way to free myself, I would be dead. And I came up with a plan. I told them that I needed to contact a partner in London to get access to the wallets. They gave me a phone. I called my friend, but instead of giving him the passwords, I whispered, ‘I'm being held captive.’
The investigation is determining how they found out about my assets, and I suspect that one of my former clients leaked the information. They were interested in large sums of money and were prepared to kill...", recalls the businessman himself.
Subsequently, the news that a case had been opened in Spain concerning the kidnapping of a British cryptocurrency broker spread across world-renowned news resources.
